Theater: Jackie Robinson — A Game Apart

A Game Apart provides a glimpse of Jackie Robinson's life during a bygone era of separate and unequal locker rooms, whites-only hotels, and restaurants with only a back door for colored athletes to enter. Witness the hopeless humiliation of a star player who was showered with adulation on the field and became a second-class citizen when he walked off the diamond. Meet Jackie's compatriots fighting the same battles between the end zones, inside the ring, and around the track. A Game Apart is a powerful lesson of courage through dedication, perseverance, and leadership.

About Mike Wiley: Acclaimed actor and playwright Mike Wiley has spent the last decade fulfilling his mission to bring educational theatre to young audiences and communities nationwide. In the early days of his career, Wiley found few theatrical resources to highlight key events and figures in African-American history. To bring these stories to life, he started his own production company. Through his performances, Wiley has introduced countless students and communities to the legacies of Emmett Till, Henry "Box" Brown, and more.

Live Music: Saltwater Sky

Saltwater Sky is a rising country band from the Pacific Northwest and Wyoming. Formed in 2019, they've been making waves on the music scene with their small-town storytelling and lively atmosphere.

With their soulful, unapologetic, and charismatic sound, Saltwater Sky leans on the bluesy rock influences of their musical upbringings. Painting colors with their melody-driven vocals and a blazing fiddle that battles equally for the front, Saltwater Sky brings a unique country sound with honesty and enthusiasm.

Scott Heuston, the band's lead singer, fell in love with songwriting in college. He has written over 400 songs and is a published poet. Believing that lyrics and a strong message are essential to their sound, country music is a proven runway for the opportunity to tell a story "our way."

Community Event: History of Automobile Dealerships

“The Head of Auto Row” is a documented tagline used by one of the earliest (and largest) dealerships in Walla Walla and refers to the corner of Alder Street & Spokane Street. Around that corner, within a block or two, was the early central location for several dealerships.

February’s speaker, R.L. McFarland, cites Joe Drazen’s site as critical to the research of the early history of automotive dealerships — Drazen’s archive of everything over decades offers little to no context for each photo. So, the mystery of “sleuthing out the context” emerges. That is where “Up To The Times” and the “Reverse Directories” have proved invaluable.

R.L. has taken a journey to stitch together and create/provide context, allowing the viewing audience to better connect with what’s in the photos and then pull up bits and pieces of memories of their own to add to the story.

Live Music: Big Bang Boom

Big Bang Boom is a three-piece Kindie Music Band from Greensboro, North Carolina, that began in the minds and aspirations of talented artists and long-time musicians: Chuck Folds, Steve Willard, and Eddie Walker.

After 20 years of touring the grown-up stages, Chuck, Steve, and Eddie decided to expand their horizons and play for kids whose parents (like themselves) want MORE from children’s music. In 2007, this dynamic dad trio began to create parent-friendly children’s music!

They write songs with a pop sensibility by cleverly mixing alternative, hip-hop, rock, pop, country, and other genres to create music that adults and children enjoy. The themes of their songs focus on building character traits and education through relatable stories that engage people of all ages.

Their song titled “Monster Under the Bed” won the grand prize in the 2011 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and they wrote and performed the music for the WFMY’s Emmy Award Winning Community Service program, Read 2 Succeed!

On Stage is where Big Bang Boom shines brightest! You may have seen their high energy, interactive performances at countless libraries (Yes, they are LOUD in the library!), schools, performing arts centers, museums, festivals, and private and community events all over the USA.

FILM: Take One Thing Off

An existential odyssey based on the original music from cabaret singer/bon vivant Scout Durwood’s debut studio album, Take One Thing Off is a twenty-two-episode digital series combining music videos and narrative sketch following Scout’s transition from performing in dive bars and supper clubs in NYC to the City of Angels where IRL is IR-relevant forcing her to step onto the biggest, strangest stage she’s encountered so far: The Internet.

Synopsis

features eleven comedy vignettes paired with eleven original music videos from Scout Durwood’s debut studio album with Blue Elan Records. The series follows the life of chanteuse/bon vivant Scout Durwood, who has spent most of her adult life singing in New York supper clubs and dive bars, fostering a meaningful connection between audience and performer. Now living in Los Angeles, where IRL seems IR-relevant, she’s stepping onto the biggest, strangest stage of all: The Internet.

In this twenty-two-episode digital series, Scout traverses the deserts of YouTube tutorials in her episodes Make-Up Tutorial, DIY Cupcake Bra, and Scout on Scout. She opines on the chemical reactions society has labeled “romance” in her ballads Here We Are and Falling in Love and delves into the complicated nature of female friendships in Frenemies. Take One Thing Off is as esoteric as it is slapstick, as high-concept as it is low-brow. You’ll laugh. She’ll cry. Grown men will drink wine from a baby pool. So be the strange you wish to see in the world, and in the immortal words of Coco Chanel, “After you dress but before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”

Comedy: Scout Durwood

Scout Durwood Live combines comedy, music, storytelling, and cabaret into a singular narrative extravaganza, including hits from Take One Thing Off and Comedy Electronica such as (I Don’t Want To) Hold Ur Baby, Sexually Implicit, Steal Ur Girlfriend, and more.

Inspired by her formative years as a go-go dancer and burlesque emcee, Scout’s joyfully irreverent outlook on life embraces Big Tent Queerness as a way of spreading love and unity throughout the land. A throwback to the Bette Midler bathhouse shows of the 70s, this lightly interactive experience embraces queerness not just as sexual orientation but as a way of life. From a dance craze inspired by Wacky Wavers to a heartfelt embrace of the darkest parts of our psyche, Scout encourages audiences to fly their freak flag with pride. It’s a comedy special with a lot of heart.

Literature: The Storytelling Power of Comic Books

Josh Tuininga is an author, artist, and designer. After studying fine art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he founded an art and design agency where he works as creative director. His work has been published in the magazines Communication Arts and HOW Design. Tuininga is the author of the children’s book Why Blue? and Dream On. We Are Not Strangers is his first graphic novel.

Despite the graphic novel’s skyrocketing popularity, many still view the art form as unsophisticated or less credible than traditional forms of literature. In this talk, comic artist Josh Tuininga shows how comic books and graphic novels are not only powerful art forms but have unique abilities to challenge young readers in surprising ways and can help prepare students for a rapidly changing future.

Tuininga traces the origins of sequential art — exploring the art form’s evolution and its impact on readers and culture throughout history. He also shares an in-depth look at the sequential art process as he presents his graphic novel, We Are Not Strangers — a true family story that follows a Jewish immigrant’s efforts to help his Japanese-American neighbors while they are incarcerated during World War II.

Live Theater: Carmelita Colon: A Living History Presentation

A Vindication for the Unwritten – or How to Write Yourself Back Into History

Written by Ana Maria Campoy

Meet Carmelita Colon. Born in Mexico, she arrived in Walla Walla, Washington Territory, with her husband Sebastian in the 1860s. They ran a mule train to the gold mines in Idaho for several years. Later, they sold tamales and ran a Mexican restaurant in Walla Walla.

What was life like in Walla Walla in the late 1800s? What was Carmelita’s life like? Might she have seen women’s rights pioneers Susan B. Anthony and Abigail Scott Duniway speak about suffrage when they toured the Pacific Northwest (including Walla Walla) in 1871?

Based on extensive research, Ana Maria Campoy has created a vibrant portrait of Carmelita Colon, from her childhood in Mexico to life in California and then migration to Washington. She brought this early Walla Walla resident to life and wrote her back into history.

Carmelita is being developed by Key City Public Theatre (KCPT) in Port Townsend under a Washington Stories Fund grant from Humanities Washington. A one-woman show, another character will be the Voice of History.

This program will be followed by a Q&A/discussion period with the audience involving Carmelita, the playwright, and another researcher. Audience interaction is an important part of this and all public humanities programs.

The program is part of KCPT’s Washington Women’s History Tour: Suffrage Lecture Series – a dramatic chronology of the suffrage/women’s rights movement across Washington State, focusing on under-represented voices and little-known stories of BIPOC women.

An expanded, fully-staged version of Carmelita will run as part of Key City Public Theatre’s mainstage season beginning in late April. A touring version will also be available.

Live Music: Remembering WWII — 80 Years

This performance will celebrate Veterans — the brave men and women who have served our country. This event is especially timely because 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

This musical tribute will also celebrate our valley’s wonderful collaboration and vast talent as a joint endeavor between Walla Walla Choral Society and Walla Walla Valley Bands. Both organizations are honored to unite, spotlighting the music and “greatest generation” from this era.

Throughout the early 1940s, music played a key role in the American war effort. Families gathered around their radios for wartime updates and to enjoy music designed to boost morale and help them grapple with the complex and extraordinary feelings of loss. Songs ranged from patriotic to sentimental, toe-tapping to quietly nostalgic.

Glen Miller, the leader of the Army Air Force Band, toured to bring hope and entertainment to exhausted soldiers and weary workers at home. Kate Smith, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, and the Andrews Sisters are some of the era’s amazing singers. The lively Big Band, Swing, and Jazz music of the time brought a sense of hope and celebration then — and will do so again in this performance.

Live Music: Deep Sea Diver

Deep Sea Diver is a Seattle-based rock band led by guitarist and vocalist Jessica Dobson, who recently signed up with Sub Pop Records to release their music to the world and beyond.

The rapturous “Billboard Heart” is a stunning introduction to Deep Sea Diver’s universe. The song puts Dobson and her band in the company of St. Vincent, TV on the Radio, and Flock of Dimes, bands that have found ornate and magnetic ways to make indie rock by discarding notions of how it must sound or what it must say. Dobson punches through her past here with this new song and forthcoming album. As she howls during “Billboard Heart,” she is “welcoming the future by letting go of it.”

Dobson offers this in the song “‘Billboard Heart,” which is a song that felt like a strange transmission, a new emotion, and a spirit-filled dream when it came. It is my nod to the simplicity of my favorite Tom Petty songs and my love for Wim Wenders’ film Paris, Texas. The feeling of standing in the lonesome desert, embracing every particle of yourself, even the ones that are hard to look at, and fighting for your spirit to move through this world without entanglement. It is about being present and embracing the future while wholeheartedly letting go of any control I think I have in this life. ‘Billboard Heart’ is both a longing for something that may not exist and a place where I can be free.”

“Billboard Heart” is Deep Sea Diver’s first new music since Impossible Weight, the band’s Billboard charting album from 2020. It includes the title track duet with Sharon Van Etten and “Stop Pretending,” which made “NPR Music’s “100 Best Songs of 2020.” Impossible Weight was also #1 on KEXP’s “Top 90.3 Albums of 2020” list.

In addition to her work as Deep Sea Diver, Dobson has logged time as a touring member for Beck and The Shins and has performed with numerous other musicians, including Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Spoon, Boeckner, and Dinosaur Jr. In addition to headline touring, they’ve supported the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Wilco. Most recently, Deep Sea Diver played to the largest audiences of their career, supporting Pearl Jam twice within the last year — first with a handful of dates in the Fall of 2023 and, more recently, a lengthier run in May 2024.

Live Music: ACTORS

From Vancouver, Canada, post-punk new wave outfit ACTORS provides driving beats, massive hooks, and dramatic atmospheres that are equally melancholy and electrifying. “Cinematic” is a worn-out word, but here, it is simply impossible not to envision movie scenes unfolding as each track plays.

Sounds like neon-lit black leather...
— BrooklynVegan

In 2018, the Jason Corbett-led foursome signed with Toronto-based Artoffact Records and released its long-awaited debut, It Will Come to You, and quickly became one of the marquee acts on the label. Corbett writes, produces, mixes, and masters all ACTORS music at his own Vancouver studio, Jacknife Sound, and names David Bowie as a fundamental influence – Bowie’s sense of confidence and creativity are in full effect on It Will Come to You. But much more than a retro act, this music stands on its own, full of life and unforgettable hooks. Perhaps best described as a “post-post-punk” band, ACTORS belongs in the mix alongside bands like The Soft Moon and Cold Cave, pushing music forward via a deep knowledge of the past.

ACTORS spent the 18 months after the release of It Will Come to You touring the USA, Canada, and Europe while hitting many of the best-loved festivals, including Terminus Festival, Wave-Gotik-Treffen, Cold Waves, Infest, A Murder of Crows, and many others. The band gave sessions to LA’s Part Time Punks and Seattle’s KEXP, while their songs “Slaves” & “Crystal” found their way to episodes of the Netflix series The Order, and “We Don’t Have to Dance” was featured in Nancy Drew. In Late 2020, ACTORS announced a new single, “Love U More,” with Juno-Award-winning director Peter Ricq contributing his talents to the accompanying video.

Vancouver’s brilliant post-punk and new-wave quartet ACTORS continue their flair for sonic cinematics in the video for their latest track ‘Face Meets Glass’... The atmosphere quivers with singer Jason Corbett’s crooning reverb augmented by shivering guitars and stark synths.
— POST-PUNK.COM

Three years later, the follow-up, Acts Of Worship, broke hearts and set fire to dance floors. Corbett points to legends who changed the face of pop music in their day – David Bowie, Roxy Music, Duran Duran – as inspirations. “It’s about embracing who you are and having the confidence to do what you feel and not be afraid,” he says. The album saw the debut of new bassist Kendall Wooding. Corbett noted that the current lineup, completed by synth player Shannon Hemmett and drummer Adam Fink, perfectly reflects the balance of masculine and feminine energy contained within the songs.

Opening the concert is the experimental post-punk electronic duo Plasticstatic. Their unique style blends shoegaze atmosphere with esoteric electronic washes for a truly special sound that rides the razor-thin margin between organic and electronic.

Limned with nostalgia, soaked in Southern gothic lore, the duo meticulously assembles songs to preserve the spirit of the stories they tell.

Live Music: The Talbott Brothers

The Talbott Brothers, hailing from Imperial, Nebraska, blend country, Americana, and heartland rock with their signature blood harmonies and soul-stirring lyrics. After years in Portland, Nick and Ty Talbott returned to their Midwest roots, rediscovering the raw authenticity that shaped them.

Their upcoming album, Borderlands (out May 2, 2025), explores the emotional frontiers of love, loss, and resilience. Stripped down to its acoustic core, the record channels the grit of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Creedence Clearwater, while drawing inspiration from modern greats like Zach Bryan and Chris Stapleton.

Rolling Stone praised their sound as “cinematic folk-rock for open highways,” while Billboard highlighted their “haunting brotherly harmonies.” With millions of streams and a growing fanbase, The Talbott Brothers continue to craft music that feels like home—honest, unpolished, and deeply resonant.

Community Event: Lewis & Clark — Living History Weekend

The Pacific Northwest Living Historians (PNLH) will demonstrate the tools and skills employed by the explorers of the epic Lewis and Clark expedition.

Captain Meriwether Lewis and Captain William Clark were sent by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and to seek the best route to the Pacific Ocean through what we now call the Pacific Northwest. During their voyage of 1804 – 1806, they led the Corps of Northwestern Discovery overland from St. Louis, Missouri, to the mouth of the Columbia River and back again. With no means for resupply, the Corps (a U.S. Army unit of 31 men accompanied by Sacagawea and her infant child, Jean Baptiste) needed to use diverse skills and the right tools to survive.

Dressed in clothing of the style and materials worn by the members of the Corps in 1805-1806, PNLH interpreters will demonstrate and discuss many of those tools and skills, such as handling flintlock firearms, camp cooking, making clothing from leather, and making canoe paddles. Visitors can learn the history and stories of the Lewis and Clark expedition: the native people that they met, the unfamiliar territory they traveled and mapped, and the strange new animals and plants they discovered.

Community Event: Truck Show

Not too long ago, horses were replaced by “speed wagons,” motorized vehicles. Fort Walla Walla Museum is excited to recognize that history with the American Truck Historical Society, which will host its annual truck show.

Come out for the day and see locally owned vintage trucks, pickup trucks, vintage cars, and “old iron” on display. Meet the owners and enjoy stories about their vehicles and equipment. The Annual Truck Show includes the Blue Mountain Chapter members’ vehicles and equipment, which reflects the road transportation history and the connection with the region.

The Blue Mountain Chapter of the ATHS organizes and runs the truck show. Forty to fifty vehicles, including farm trucks, pickups, and semis, are expected to be displayed, along with small engines, tractors, and other transportation items.

Incorporated in 1971, the American Truck Historical Society preserves the history of trucks, the trucking industry, and its pioneers. An annual convention has been held each year since 1972, with a public antique truck show added in 1980. If you are interested, have stories to share, or enjoy seeing and “feeling” old trucks and cars, we look forward to meeting you!

This is the perfect event for families. There will be live music, food, fun, and fine vehicles.

His publications include “Using Literature to Teach Peace” in Peace Research: The Canadian Journal of Peace and Conflict Studies.

What makes women’s peacebuilding movements so effective—often more effective than larger-scale national and international initiatives? Why is the work of women peacebuilders less well-known and celebrated than their male counterparts? Is the collective nature of women’s peacemaking work a reason it’s both effective and underappreciated?

In this talk, meet peacebuilders beyond the usual names like Mother Theresa and Jane Addams and gain an appreciation for the collective nature of women’s peacebuilding activities. Glimpse the more peaceful horizon that could dawn if we inspired and supported women’s peacebuilding collectives.
